The long tradition of Halloween is still fascinating to adults and children alike. It’s the time for scary stories, dressing up and trick or treat. There are many different Halloween books that look at various aspects of the celebration. One of the most comprehensive of these is The Halloween Encyclopedia, compiled by Lisa Morton. The illustrated book explores folk customs from around the world and the associated rituals and artifacts. Popular culture features in a list of literature and movies, dating from 1714-2001.Famous authors, such as Edgar Allan Poe, H.P Lovecraft and James Joyce contribute to A Halloween Reader: Poems, Stories, And Plays from Halloweens Past. The compilation is edited by Lesley Pratt Bannatyne. Halloween books also feature food, which is one of the most important ingredients at the witching hour. There are lots of recipes to choose from, including traditional Pumpkin Pie and Toffee Apples. The kids will love gingerbread, popcorn and marshmallows and everything can be washed down with Pumpkin Punch. Halloween can be a chilly affair and there is a recipe for a hearty soup, namely Butternut Squash and Pumpkin Soup with grated Ginger and Dried Chili. One of the most popular family movies is the Tim Burton directed animation, The Nightmare Before Christmas. There is a book version too and it’s an ideal gift for Halloween. The story concerns Jack Skellington and his friends in Halloweentown. Jack is responsible for organizing the Halloween festivities each year but becomes bored with them. Looking for a new challenge, he discovers Christmas Town and a great adventure follows as Jack realizes that there is no place as good as home. It’s one of the best Halloween books for reading to young children after their trick or treat excursion.Children will also love Scooby Doo and the Halloween Hotel Haunt: a Glow in the Dark Mystery by Jesse Leon McCann. Fans of Scooby and his friends will already be familiar with their ghost hunting stories and this book has the added excitement of glowing in the dark when the lights are turned off. Pop-up books are popular and Halloween Bugs: A Trick or Treat Pop-Up contains ghouls and bugs and is written by David A.Carter. The Big Pumpkin, written by Erica Silverman and illustrated by S.D.Schindler is another one of the Halloween books with a charming story. It is about a witch that has grown the largest pumpkin in history but it’s far too big to make into pumpkin pie.

Halloween Tip of the Day – Homemade toddler costumes

August 18, 2008 by pcudby2

Homemade toddler Halloween costumes are a lower cost option. Many of the favorite cartoon characters are animals, and make popular Halloween costume choices for toddlers. One-piece suits, especially those that come with a hood, make an ideal starting point for a toddler animal suit. Add a tail and ears, get busy with some fabric paint or a marker pen, apply some face paint, and soon you will have a cat, rabbit, lion, or whatever you want. If you can find a large soft toy for a low price at a garage sale, you may be able to remove the tail, ears, whiskers, paws and other parts, and sew them onto your toddler’s suit to create a near instant and very successful costume. Chances are, the costume will remain your toddler’s favorite outfit long after Halloween.

The great thing about using a pumpkin is that it is easier to carve, and you have so much more scope to design an impressive face on the side of a pumpkin. Pumpkins come mostly in either grey or orange. It is the orange color that has become most associated with Halloween.
